  2. John Winthrop’s “City upon a Hill,” Now the onely way to avoyde this shipwracke, and to provide for our posterity, is to followe the counsell of Micah, to doe justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with our God. For this end, wee must be knitt together, in this worke, as one man. Wee must entertaine each other in brotherly affection.
  3. Oct 23,  · To the Editor: I was, of course, delighted with A. M. Rosenthal's generous and thoughtful review of my book "City on a Hill" (Oct. 2). Readers may have been confused, however, by his uncritical.
  4. The city is not in this fallen world, though we can see glimpses from it in the hearts of Jesus followers. When we masquerade as Religious Freedom establishing in the law a particular conscience, we discriminate like the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the worst case, and like the Connecticut of John Winthrop Junior in best case.
  5. "CITY ON A HILL" "CITY ON A HILL." The term "city on a hill" was initially invoked by English-born Puritan leader John Winthrop. The concept became central to the United States' conception of itself as an exceptional and exemplary nation.. In , aboard the Arbella before the ship's departure for the New World, Winthrop recited a sermon to his fellow travelers.
  6. Oct 23,  · As the director of journalism at La Guardia Community College (part of the City University of New York), I don't understand how A. M. Rosenthal can praise James Traub's "City on a Hill.".
  7. Jul 18,  · Like the country itself, it is a rude, robust intrusion of unbridled self-interest upon a world whose traditional order was humane—in the best sense, civilized.

  9. The “city on a hill” line must have been especially apropos as Jesus looked out at the people gathered on the hillside. Jesus was also drawing on a rich history of metaphor about the city of Jerusalem (aka Zion; aka God’s holy hill). Jesus was reminding his Jewish audience that God had chosen them to spread his glory throughout the earth.
